Traditional acupuncture as practised by the Acupuncturists at the Allerton Health Centre is based on Chinese medicine principles that have been developed, researched and refined for over 2,500 years; these principles aim to restore, promote and maintain good health.
Acupuncture's benefits are now widely acknowledged all over the world and in the past decade, traditional acupuncture has begun to feature more prominently in mainstream medicine in the UK.
The underlying principle of traditional acupuncture treatment is that illness and pain occur when the body's 'qi', or 'vital energy', cannot flow freely.
Alternatively if there is too much or too little energy in the system, ill health may occur. By inserting ultra-fine, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to re-establish the free flow of qi, to restore balance and trigger the body's natural healing response.
By using a holistic approach acupuncture can improve the functioning of the whole person, not just the most troublesome symptoms that are causing difficulties.
The British Acupuncture Council is the leading body for the practice of traditional acupuncture in the UK. It actively promotes integrated healthcare and funds clinical research into the benefits of traditional acupuncture. Please see the British Acupuncture Councils Fact sheets for further information on the current research available for the conditions listed below. http://www.acupuncture.org.uk/public-research.html
Traditional Chinese Acupuncture aims to help with various conditions including:
- Back pain relief
- Fertility boosting
- IVF support
- Frozen shoulder
- Pain control
- Urinary incontinence
Back pain can affect anyone at any age and most people will suffer from it at some point in their lives. It is the UK's leading cause of disability and one of the main reasons for work-related sickness absence. Acupuncture can help back pain by providing pain relief; by stimulating nerves located in muscles and other tissues, acupuncture leads to the release of endorphins and natural pain killers. It also reduces inflammation and helps improve muscular stiffness and joint mobility.
Acupuncture can be particularly useful as an adjunct to conventional care, or other treatments available at the clinic such as osteopathy, for patients with more severe symptoms. Depending on the severity of the condition, we usually advise an initial course of approximately 4 treatments.
Research suggests that around one in six couples are likely to experience problems conceiving, with more turning to IVF as an alternative.
While infertility is often thought of as a female problem, only a third of cases can be linked solely to women. Fertility issues affect both male and female partners, and couples are increasingly turning to traditional acupuncture to help them conceive.
Dealing with fertility problems can be extremely stressful and both partners can become tense and anxious. This can result in poor sleep or low libido, and a reluctance to keep trying because previous attempts have failed, with every passing month, bringing more pressure to both people.
When people who are struggling to conceive opt to have acupuncture, it can have a very positive effect, creating a calmer, more relaxed state of mind.
Because acupuncture can be used to increase the immune system, regulate blood circulation and reduce stress, it is used before pregnancy to prepare the body to generate healthy eggs. In women, it can regulate the menstrual cycle and promote ovulation by controlling hormonal imbalances, thus helping to increase the chance of natural conception.
In men traditional acupuncture treatment has been shown to influence the quality and quantity of male sperm, improving the motility and count. Acupuncture treatment for a three to six month period can help boost the ability to conceive naturally. If assisted conception is sought, however, acupuncture can work alongside Western medicine to effectively increase the success rates.
Getting pregnant is of course not the end of the story, as we continue to treat women through the whole pregnancy, helping with back pain, morning sickness and pre birth acupuncture, to prepare the body for natural delivery, as well as induction and breech baby turning.
Fertility is a whole-body process, not just something that solely involves the reproductive organs. Consequently at your sessions you may be given nutritional, dietary and lifestyle advice to aid the functioning of the whole of your body.
